What do I actually do in a zen garden?
Rake. That is genuinely it. Drag to pull ridge patterns through the sand, smooth them away, place and move stones, and let the garden become whatever it becomes. There is no score, no timer pressure, and no way to do it wrong — the practice is the raking itself, the same reason physical desktop zen gardens have sat next to keyboards for decades.
Why does raking sand feel so calming?
Slow, repetitive, self-paced motion with immediate sensory feedback is a classic grounding pattern — the same family as knitting, breath counting, or tracing. The garden gives your hands one simple thing to do, which quietly gives a busy mind one simple thing to follow. It pairs well with the built-in breathing exercise.
Does my garden save?
Your garden lives for the session — like a real sand garden, it is beautifully impermanent. Members can download their creations and share them to the community gallery, and their practice time counts toward gentle progress tracking.
